I've pointed out the monopsony power of employers a few months ago where the simple fact that there are few employers and many employees results in the imperfect competition that is monopsony, but I didn't put together the dots about why monopsonists might want to overwork current employees rather than hire new employees (i.e., to keep surplus labor out there and thus keep labor costs down) the way you did.
