I'm curious about what constitutes the "middle class." Is there a graph that shows the size of the "middle class" from, say 1946 forward in proportion to population? And if "middle class" is broken down into "upper," "average," and "lower," how are these segments defined? President Elect Obama's "middle class" seems quite a large proportion of the population.

Middle class is like nice or pornography: You can define it like you want.

Politicians define middle class as broadly as possible to maximize their appeal for their policies to help the middle class. You can define it quantitatively, for example, by removing the top and bottom quarters from the population & calling the remainder the middle class.

It apparently falls to me to point out that the first comment is Spam, and that the link to the presentation seems to be broken.
