This discussion was worthwhile. I would like to suggest that direct setting of minimum wages is a ham handed exercise. By _subsidizing_ the cost of those things on which wages are often spent such as health insurance, it is possible to provide EFFECTIVE wage increases. Combined with other systems such as unemployment compensation the _NEED_ for wages is reduced, driving wages upward.
