I have never been much of a fan of heinberg (and i sortuh know the whole situation in that area---he was teaching in SF mission district when i lived there (a little before hard core gentrification---of course it was expensive since i just had a low salary doing mathematical biology---i was near the tool n die punk club, and i rented a room from ex-cholos (low riders))---50$/month. I do note that while heinberg takes down krugman (I think a person on econospeak has done the same for his very noble prize) his own 'post-carbon institute does not appear to have a single 'person of color' on board (except maybe one indian immigrant). 'men see only what they look at, and they only look at what they already have in mind' (F Celine, 'north'---see wikipedia). I think thoreau had similar ideas (he invented the internet, or his father did ---its precursor---pencils.) we need the wilderness, supposedly, and not another round of book tours on 'beyond growth'. (they are a dime a dozen in my area, but they always want like $40).

What's wrong with Heinberg? He tends toward catastrophic visions but so does the US and German Defence Departments. .... and they're not necessarily wrong.

But he does seem to be quite naive about exactly what it takes to set up a homestead garden. It could be as easy as he implies it is if one assumes plenty of water, flat land and fertile soil.
